Healthy Snacks: Part 1

I’m probably one of the worst people for constantly snacking, whether it’s crisps, chocolate or a big bowl of popcorn, and I’m even worse for snacking late at night when I’m in bed watching a movie or some TV show from Netflix I’m hooked on. In a bid to try and eat better whilst still being able to eat the things I want, I went on the hunt for some healthy snacks, and today I’m going to share these with you on this post. I’m actually glad I’ve found some of these amazing companies, as they’ve brought a whole new meaning to healthy snacking.

First up are Hippeas, organic chickpea puffs and I remember when I spotted them thinking…wow aren’t these unusual looking, from the packaging to the name, to the product itself. As well as being organic as I already mentioned and “packed with good vibes”, there are many other reasons why these are good for you:

High in fibre
A source of protein
Gluten free
Vegan free
No additives or preservatives

When I received these my first thoughts were regarding the name and packaging, the packets are so bright you couldn’t miss them, and with a name like Hippeas I know I’d be curious to see what these were if I saw them in a store. The real question was whether they would taste as good as they looked. Chickpeas are something I’ve never tried or thought of trying so I had no idea what to expect from these chickpea puffs. I was sent multiple packets of different flavours: Pepper Power, Sweet & Smokin’, Far Out Fajita and In Herbs We Trust, but recently when I had a little look on their website I’ve noticed they’ve added a new flavour, Cheese & Love so I’ll definitely need to give them a try. Once I got round to opening a packet I couldn’t help but be reminded of Wotsits because of their shape, so already I was liking these. They taste so great, are full of flavour and so filling too, in addition to being less than 100 calories. My favourite flavour has to be In Herbs We Trust, they reminded me of a herby bread basket, but it’s hard to choose as they genuinely all taste amazing. I think it’s safe to say that Hippeas are my new crisps replacement when it comes to snacking. They can be bought in the likes of Boots, Waitrose, Superdrug, and WHSmith as well as online from Amazon if you fancy bulk buying a box of 24 for just over £20. I’m a sucker for popcorn and at times can eat too much of it, so finding a more healthier bag of popcorn from a company called SkinnyPop was a great discovery. So what makes this popcorn healthy? Again, there are many positives about this snack:

No artificial flavours or preservatives
Gluten free
Peanut and tree nut free
Dairy free
Zero trans fat
A good source of fibre

Again, just like the previous snacks, presentation was simple but pretty, with their little slogan “Pure popped perfection” at the top of the packet, only making you look forward to popping these open. I was sent the sweet and salty flavour, which I guess was a bonus as I’m a big fan of both flavours so having them mixed in together allowed for a nice combination. At just 98 calories and being a popcorn fanatic, knowing this is healthier makes me feel less guilty about eating great amounts of it. Each packet is filling so will get you through that episode of Gossip Girl and prove to be great company. Not only do SkinnyPop offer sweet and salty popcorn though, they offer sea salt too, so the question is where can you find these packets of popped perfection? You can find both flavours in Budgens, Londis, and Co-op in both sharing and handy packs, and the sweet & salty hand pack in Costa at only £1. So rather than opting for that cake with your tea or coffee, why not try SkinnyPop popcorn?

Chocolate is my one true guilty pleasure and when it comes to a big bar of let’s say Dairy Milk, I can’t just break off a couple of pieces and resist temptation, I’ve got to have the whole lot. This is when I found Ombar Chocolate and discovered that chocolate can be a health food too. Research has shown that eating dark chocolate can bring about health benefits, with the benefits of raw chocolate being even larger. This is what Ombar is all about, raw chocolate, but instead of it being bitter tasting or grainy like it can be, they’ve put in time and effort to ensure a product was created that was creamy, and smooth, and so Ombar chocolate joined the market. My favourite was the coconut and vanilla, I loved the coconut flavour of the chocolate and despite these bars being smaller than the ones I’d typically eat, they were equally as filling, if not more filling than your average chocolate bar. Have any of you ever tried energy bars? I hadn’t until I tried Clif Bar, an energy bar “built to sustain your adventure”. How did Clif Bar actually begin though? The story is quite an interesting one. It all started on a bike ride, with founder Gary after eating an energy bar having a moment of realisation, determined to be that person to create an even better energy bar. Named after his father, Gary spent hours in his mother’s kitchen until he got it right, and from that moment on Clif Bar officially started. These bars are made with organic rolled oats, are a source of protein and fibre, vitamins B6 and B12 contribute to the normal release of energy, and include no high fructose corn syrup.

These are a product I’d have never thought about trying so I’m glad I got the chance to try them out. My favourite bar was probably the chocolate chip or blueberry crisp, whilst my mum’s was the white chocolate macadamia nut. Although these are made with oats, they are full of flavours, which makes these bars a whole lot tastier. Whether you’re hill walking, or going for a long bike ride, these would make the ideal backpack essential to keep your hunger at bay whilst providing you with energy to come out the other end feeling great.     Yummm! I have never tried a lot of these snacks, but I’d most want to try hippeas lol such a fun name. I lovvve skinny pop and have only ever tried the original flavor that’s lightly salted. That recipe is perfect btw. I think we are the same with our snacking — I am big on snacking throughout the day especially salty snacks. I love getting new ideas for healthy snacks so I’ll def look out for Part 2 :))

      I hadn’t until recently either, so it’s good to venture out and try new things! Definitely give Hippeas a try, I can assure you, you won’t be disappointed. Salted popcorn is my favourite so I’ll need to try the Skinny Pop version of that. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy part 2 🙂
