Last Week’s Foodie Favourites

Last week I submitted my first draft of my dissertation so what better thing to do than go out for some good food and catch a film at the cinema, something I’ve not done in a while. I was in the library from 12-6pm and the snacks just weren’t keeping me going so I couldn’t wait to indulge in proper food and just wind down for a night. David and I ended up at Bier Halle, a bar which specialises in international beers and serves great food. Well actually Google states a “dark stairwell leading to a simple underground beer hall with stocky stools, hot dogs and pizzas”, which is accurate enough but less creepy.

Bier Halle is renowned for its beer, with over 90 different beers to choose from, from the likes of Belgium, Italy, Germany and even China. Usually I’d turn my nose up at the word beer, I’ve never been a fan and have always been disgusted by the smell. I remember one time on holiday carrying a pint of beer and it spilling over me and I acted like it was the end of the world, that basically sums up how I felt towards the drink. Anyway, you literally cannot go to this place without having a beer, or a pizza, but I’ll talk about the food in a little minute. After scanning over the many pages of beers, looking at where they were from and reading the little description about its taste, I ended up going for the Framboise Bier, which is a sweet and sour raspberry flavoured fruit beer. I was actually surprisingly excited to try it, hoping it would be fruity enough to make me forget I was even drinking beer. David went for the tart flavoured cherry fruit beer. When it arrived I ended up wishing I had ordered two, it was so good. I loved the combination of the sweet and sour, and I genuinely didn’t feel like I was drinking beer. David’s was lovely too but I definitely feel like I made the better choice. They have crazy flavours like toffee, or peach, so next time I’ll be doing a taste test of the menu.

As well as beer, Bier Halle offers a variety of food on their menu such as soup, nachos, hot dogs, sandwiches, and of course pizza. I couldn’t go to this place and not get a pizza. Last time I got a simple margarita, but I thought I’d spice things up this time round and opted for the Stornoway Black Pudding and Free Range Egg pizza. I know what you’re thinking, egg on a pizza? But if it didn’t go then they wouldn’t serve it right? I’m a massive fan of both black pudding and egg so as well as just being incredibly hungry, I was looking forward to see how this would work out on a pizza. It came and yes the couple beside me kept stating “she got egg on her pizza” as if it was some sort of crime but I let them natter on about that and tucked straight in. Piece of black pudding were dotted all around the pizza and a poached egg right in the centre. It was just too good, and one of the best pizzas I’ve had. I can order a pizza and usually only eat around 3 or 4 slices before I’m defeated, but I demolished the entire thing and still had room for all the sweets I ate during the 2 and a half hour long film. This really is the pizza palace where good things happen. Pizzas range from £11-£16 depending on what one you go for, BUT here is the good part, Bier Halle always have a 2 for 1 deal on their pizzas on a daily basis from 12-10pm, so really you’re typically paying around £14/£15 for two pizzas, which is pretty amazing if you ask me. I’m looking forward to widening my beer horizons in this place sometime soon and ordering another EGGcelent pizza (sorry I had to).

Next up is a place I call heaven but which actually goes by the name of Deesserts. This is basically a sit in restaurant dedicated to desserts, and only desserts. With its booths, glittery pillars, brightly coloured decor and pretty good choice of music, you already feel like you’ll be returning here in no time at all. This place offers every dessert imaginable, from hot cookie dough, waffles, every ice-cream flavour under the sun, sundaes, smoothies, milkshakes and crepes. I’ve tried a range of items from the menu, smoothies, an After Eight milkshake, an After Eight Minty Magic Sundae and my most common choice…the crepe. What I love about deesserts is that you can build your own crepe or waffle from the list of sauces and toppings on the menu. Without fail I always go for white chocolate sauce and strawberry slices on mine, with the crepe also coming with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream and whipped cream, all of which is presented beautifully, almost too beautifully that you get so distracted taking pictures of the food and hold back from actually eating it. Again, on Thursday night I went for my usual choice, which would have cost me a fiver, but cost £4.50, oh the perks of being a student and carrying your student card around with you 24/7. This dessert is like no other, to the point that it doesn’t even go to the stomach, it goes straight to the heart. The vanilla ice-cream is so creamy and light, and the white chocolate sauce is the perfect combination with the strawberries and crepe. As soon as you see that plate coming you know you’re in for a real treat.

I’m doing a Spanish degree and my dissertation is about the cinematic representation of historical memory in Spain 🙂 it’s fascinating but wow it’s challenging to write. What is your dissertation about? And haha I know the feeling! It makes you appreciate your free time so much more! xx

That sounds SO interesting but like you said I can imagine it must be hard to put it all into words! Mines is on loneliness, and whether there’s a relationship between loneliness and the characteristics of our social networks (friendships) such as how many friends you have, quality, romantic status etc! xxxx

Yes, it’s only been around for over a year! I’m a sucker for desserts, I can leave a main meal saying that I’m full up, but I ALWAYS have room for dessert! Thanks so much 🙂 give it a try asap!
